Selected Rocks (Study), 2020

An inquiry into chance, whimsy and the paradox of choice. The rocks depicted here were hand selected from a beach on Georgian Bay.

Imagine a beach filled with rocks—of various sizes, shapes, colours, and textures. Now imagine yourself on that beach, completely alone, walking through the rocks. At some point on your walk you will, rather unavoidably, kneel down and pick up a rock you like, and it will travel around with you in your coat pocket for some time.

Why did you choose that rock?
What were the parameters?
Are you more prone to smooth rocks over jagged?
Was it selected for yourself? A loved one?
